The .EDU TLD officially restricted to accredited post-secondary institutions and organizations that are accredited by nationally recognized accrediting agencies.

In practice the TLD is used mostly by educational institutions in the United States.

Prior to 2000, the TLD had no restrictions, so some domains are "grandfathered" into the EDU, even though they don't meet today's restrictions.
