Don't buy on impulse.
Don't buy "brandable" names. This means names that "sound good", but don't apply to any particular existing product. "PhunkyPhone.com", etc.

When you start domaining, it's important to "get a feel" for the landscape. What are the tools? What's the terminology domainers are using? Who are the players?
How do you start figuring this out?
The site DomainMindMap.com has a cool visualization of the entire domaining universe. It's a great tool for getting started. Or, even if you already know what you're doing.
Here's a screenshot:

Read the book "The Domain Game", by David Kesmodel. That gives a great introduction to the Domaining and how it all started. I learned a ton from it.
