Here is what I look for in order of importance:

    1. Must be .COM.
    2. No dashes or digits.
    3. Monthly searches for the exact phrase of the words in the DOMAIN. I use the Google keyword tool for this.
    4. CPC (cost per click) of exact phrase of the words in the DOMAIN. This gives you an idea of how interested advertisers are in this phrase. Also from Google keyword tool.
    5. Fewest characters in domain are better. Single words are better. No more than 3 words.
    6. I domain names that end in S.

Elliot's Blog had six tips about how to find buyers:

    In summary:

    1. Good domains will have many competing companies that want that domain.
    2. There should be a mix of small and large companies that might be interested.
    3. Companies in the industry already own generic domains.
    4. Companies selling something, like a product or service.
    5. Products and services with high profit margins.
    6. Existing companies own the same domain with different extensions
